Have you noticed that food doesn't taste the same anymore,it might be chocolate,coffee, sauce pop, milk, tomatoes and vegetables.Even KFC and takeaway piazzas taste different.
It is no secret some food manufacturers are altering the foods we eat by reducing salt and fat to make it healthier, and and milk is one of the things that I think has changed dramatically.
Mass production of fruit and vegetables and genetically modified produce has led to loss of flavour and it is increasingly difficult to find a tasty tomato.
So maybe it is my age, now I have reached the big 50 it seems no food tastes the same, but maybe is it because of our tastebuds.
Our Tatebuds
I have just learned that we have no less than10, 000 tastebuds on our tongues and some people have even more. It is reckoned 20% of the population are known as the super-tasters.These are the lucky people who have the chance of becoming food -tasters for the big supermarkets!
Tastebuds are tiny sensory organs grouped together in the little red bumps on your tongue. Every bump contains around 200 tastebuds, and they have tiny sensual hairs known as micro-villl.
Whilst we are eating the small particles of food that come into contact with the miniscual hairs send messages back to the brain about how the food should taste.
There are five types of taste and these are separated into five categories.
- bitter
- sweet
- salt
- savoury
- sour
The Life of Tastebuds
When we are born we have masses of taste buds not just on our tongues ,but also on the roof and sides of the mouth,these gradually diminish and remain mainly on the tongue.
This is why children can take an early dislike to foods as they taste stronger to them than to adults.
Tastebuds are replenished every two weeks, but this process diminishes as we age, and beyond the age of 50 the loss of tastebuds becomes greater. You may end up with only 5,000 with salt the first to decrease.
Bad Taste, Good Taste
Other factors that can impair your tastebuds are vitamin deficiency. and some antibiotics.These can have an adverse affect on the mouth lining. Smoking will also dull your sense of taste, as the toxins and heat will kill off your tastebuds.
Research has shown we can maximise your taste senses by ensuring you eat foods with a strong flavour and also keep up a good variety of flavours to keep testing your tastebuds.
So is this why are food doesn't taste the same anymore. What are our expectations? Are our favourite foods embedded in our memory and we just can't recreate the good old days.
