If you are a sports fan and cycling is your favoured sport, then you will instantly recognise the sporting terms; King of the Mountains and The Yellow Jersey.
Both these are awarded to riders in the Tour de France. The world famous annual cycling race .Lasting three weeks, the gruelling Tour de France is made up of 21 stages and covers a total distance of over 3,470 kilometres.
Seven times winner Lance Armstrong has been one of the most famous and popular competitors in the Tour de France.
The Yellow Jersey
The Yellow Jersey is one of the most famous icons in sport and is worn by the overall leader of The Tour de France.
The Tour de France was founded in 1902 by Henri Desrange who was The editor of the French newspaper called L'Auto, who's circulation rocketed with it's involvement in the race.
During the 1919 Tour de France it occurred to Henri Desrange that it was not altogether clear to the many spectators that they knew who was leading the race.So on July the 10th, Desrange decided it was to be a yellow jersey, and all because L'Auto was printed on yellow paper. It was another great marketing ploy for his paper and the famous yellow jersey was born.

King of the Mountains
King of the Mountains was first introduced into The Toure de France in 1933 and was won by the great Spanish rider VicenteTrueba.
Points are awarded in the The Toure de France for the first over the top of each mountain. Every climb over the Pyrenees or Alps has a rating for the easiest to the hardest with the easiest being a category four.The rider who gains the most points in the mountain stages is known as King of the Mountains.
The polka-dot jersey was introduced to the tour in 1975 to distinguish the King of the Mountains from the other riders. The polka-dot design was derived from the then sponsors Poulain chocolate bars, whos wrappers were covered in dots.During their sponsorship in the 1980's the King of the Mountains winner won their own weight in chocolate.
The King of the Mountains is also known as the Mountain Goat for their superior climbing ability.
